The twenty-piece Big Band made its debut at the annual Fillmore Street Jazz Festival in San Francisco, July 2003.

The Band's swinging second season has been highlighted with guest artists such as John Handy and Herb Gibson—and have played to delighted audiences numbering upwards of 8,000. The Big Band under the direction of Dr. Karlton Hester brings together most of the top Jazz musicians and embodies some of the greatest music educators in the northern California Bay Area.

The Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band was established to honor the legacy of African American art, culture and life in the area. Its intention is to play a role in the economic revitalization of the Historic Fillmore Jazz District as a new destination point in San Francisco.
